Horizontal Wood Fencing
Our Favorite:Horizontal Wood Fencing
We all have our favorites. A favorite pillow, favorite food, and even though we’d be hard-pressed to ever admit it, our favorite child. when it comes down to our favorite fences to build, Horizontal Wood Fencing takes the cake. While traveling through California back in 2010, I noticed many homes had fences that were all horizontal in design. Having installed mostly picket type fences up to that point, I was intrigued and excited to put a Florida twist on it. So, here are our versions.
Horizontal wood fences construction
Now you must keep in mind that most pickets used to build fences are 5/8″ thick on average. We considered using 1′ finished wood but that only gave us a thickness of 3/4″ which was only slightly thicker than the pickets. That’s when we decided on a few different options. Firstly we use pine corral boards that are rough cut and a true 1″ thick. And for customers wanting something a little more, we opted for 2′ finished lumber which is a full 1 1/2″ inches thick. Now due to the weight of these newly designed garden structures, we install our posts at 5′ apart instead of the standard in the fencing industry of 8′ apart. We only use screws for fasteners and make sure all of our gates have metal gate frames.
Horizontal Wood Fencing prices
The pricing is slightly higher than traditional fencing. The thicker wood added posts and using coated screw fasteners only is the primary reason for the additional costs. Once you see the lumber we use and the way we install this fencing, you will understand the added value you are getting. I have horizontal wood fencing with aluminum fencing at my house and I love it. Add our staining and painting package and you are sure to get your money’s worth out of this fence.
